Diedre Nguyen maintains second-place standing in 72nd Assembly District primary
Diedre Nguyen is poised to make the November ballot in the race for the 72nd District seat in the state Assembly, maintaining a slim lead over incumbent Tyler Diep 2½ weeks after the March 3 primary election.
As of Friday evening and with the Orange County registrar of voters office estimating that all ballots had been counted countywide, Nguyen (D-Garden Grove) held second place in the primary standings over Diep (R-Westminster) by 0.7 percentage points.
The top two vote-getters in the primary will appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.
Former state Sen. Janet Nguyen (R-Fountain Valley) holds the top spot by a comfortable margin in the four-candidate race.
Diedre Nguyen is a Garden Grove City Council member and a cancer geneticist.
Diep, a former Westminster councilman, is in his first term in the Assembly. He held second place in the primary standings over Diedre Nguyen in early returns but slowly lost it as the registrar counted more ballots.
“As a cancer scientist, I’ve been talking to voters about a high-quality healthcare system that meets Californians’ needs,” Diedre Nguyen said Friday. “Better, more accessible services at affordable prices are critical during the current [coronavirus] crisis and beyond. I look forward to continuing the discussion with voters about these issues, the economy and much more as we move toward the November election.”
Diep repeated an earlier quote that “the preliminary outcome of this election is not ideal but certainly not unexpected due to the huge amount of money that was spent against us by corporations like Lyft and Uber.”
