Orange County reports 7 new deaths due to COVID-19

Orange County has tallied seven more deaths and an additional 130 cases of the coronavirus, per the latest COVID-19 update provided by the Orange County Health Care Agency.

There have been 217 coronavirus-related deaths in total. From that number, 102 skilled nursing facility residents have died of the disease. Four of the seven deaths reported on Saturday fell into that category.

The county has seen a reported 8,269 cases of COVID-19, and an estimated 3,947 have recovered from their infection. Recovery numbers are calculated by taking the previous 28-day cumulative case count and subtracting the current day mortality.

As of Saturday, there were 306 coronavirus cases that required hospitalization, with 151 of those patients in an intensive care unit. The 306 hospitalizations match a pandemic-high, a mark also reported on June 8.

The county healthcare agency also reported 673 tests for COVID-19, bringing the total number of tests administered to 177,950.

People in the age range of 25-34 make up 19% of the county’s COVID-19 cases. Ages 45-54 account for 18%, while age groups of 35-44 and 55-64 each stand at 15%. Another 15% of cases across the county are age 24 and younger.

The coronavirus continues to be particularly dangerous for the elderly, as 74.7% of the county’s deaths due to the disease have involved a person who was at least 65 years old.

By age range, all patients who have died were:

  • 85 and up: 66
  • 75 to 84: 55
  • 65 to 74: 41
  • 55 to 64: 28
  • 45 to 54: 17
  • 35 to 44: 7
  • 34 and younger: 3

Here are the latest case counts for select cities, with numbers per 10,000 residents:

  • Santa Ana: 1,774 (52.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Anaheim: 1,553 (43.2 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Huntington Beach: 417 (20.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Irvine: 236 (8.4 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Newport Beach: 175 (20.1 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Costa Mesa: 167 (14.4 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Fountain Valley: 72 (12.7 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Laguna Beach: 49 (21.0 cases per 10,000 residents)
