7 candidates to vie for 2 seats on Fountain Valley City Council in November

Two of the five seats on the Fountain Valley City Council are up for grabs in the Nov. 3 election. The seats belong to Mayor Cheryl Brothers and Councilman Steve Nagel. Nagel will not seek reelection.

Fountain Valley City Clerk Rick Miller confirmed that seven candidates have successfully filed papers and been qualified to run for City Council. Elected candidates serve four-year terms.

Here is a quick look at the candidates running, in alphabetical order:

Cheryl Brothers (incumbent): Running on a platform of fiscal stability, Brothers was first elected to the council in 2002. Brothers served on Fountain Valley’s Parks Commission for nine years and on the City Planning Commission for six years. The 46-year Fountain Valley resident has said police, fire and city services should continue to be prioritized.

Ted Bui: Bui runs a small business, Express Merchant Business Loan LLC, that provides loans to other small businesses and he is a case manager for Arlington Law Office. In his candidate statement, Bui said he plans to prioritize public safety, including supporting police officers and firefighters. He also wants to focus on policies that help small businesses that have been impacted by the coronavirus.

Jim Cunneen: A Fountain Valley resident for 27 years, Cunneen has been a trustee for the Fountain Valley School District for the past six years. He has also served on the city’s General Plan Advisory Committee, Community Foundation, Housing and Community Development Board and as a Fountain Valley Planning Commissioner. In his candidate statement, Cunneen indicated he would focus on recovery for businesses and public safety.

Glenn Grandis: The Fountain Valley High School graduate is a 40-year resident of the city. He is the founding director and current CFO of the Fountain Valley Community Foundation and serves on the Board of Directors for Fountain Valley Regional Hospital. Grandis said in his candidate statement that he would not raise taxes and would focus on the issue of homelessness. He has also said he will donate all stipends received as a City Council member to autism charities.

Tom Nguyen: A director for the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce, Nguyen has also served as chairman for Housing and Development of Fountain Valley and on the Advisory Committee for the Disabled of Fountain Valley. He is the owner of Integrity Escrow. Nguyen bills himself as a supporter of local business and an advocate for the elderly.

Mary Pham: An Orange County resident for more than 40 years, Pham is a retired medical worker. She formerly served as president of Fullerton Engineering. In her candidate statement, Pham said she intends to enhance property values for residents.

Mai-Khanh Tran: A pediatrician who has practiced in Fountain Valley for 25 years, Tran said in her candidate statement that she will focus on the health and safety issues that the community’s schools and neighborhoods face.
