The Orange County Health Care Agency on Monday reported 177 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths related to the virus in the county.

The total number of cases in Orange County is 55,892. This does not include the positive cases from antigen tests, which now total 1,703. About 4,504 PCR tests were reported on Monday. The agency reported 167 cases are currently hospitalized and 56 are in intensive care units. About 49,947 are estimated to have recovered.

The COVID-19 death toll in the county is 1,341.

Orange County is currently in the red, second-most stringent tier in the state’s reopening guidelines. Its current daily cases for every 100,000 residents is 5.2 and its testing positivity rate is at 3.2%. To qualify to move into the next tier, the county will need to drop its daily case rate down between 1 to 3.9 cases per every 100,000 and maintain its testing positivity rate between 2 to 4.9% for two consecutive weeks.

The county was first placed in the “substantial transmission” tier on Sept. 8.

Schools reopened in local districts recently, including last week in Laguna, where transitional kindergarten through second grade students returned to classrooms as part of the Laguna Beach Unified School District’s staggered reopening plan while tensions flared between parents and students both in support and against reopening secondary schools in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

The district’s board of trustees voted 5-1 to delay the reopening of schools to December after school administrators admitted that they weren’t prepared for the return of students to campuses. Students were expected back on Monday. This does not include the return of the 3,500 students in transitional kindergarten through second grade who returned on Sept. 29.
