Huntington Beach police chase, arrest DUI suspect
Huntington Beach police arrested a suspected drunk driver Sunday night, after he led them on about an hourlong car chase through parts of Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, Long Beach, Cerritos and Lakewood.
Huntington Beach Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Carey said that Ellery Garcia of San Diego, 36, surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident after police executed a pursuit intervention technique maneuver at Mae Boyar Park in Lakewood just before 9 p.m.
Huntington Beach police were alerted by Newport Beach Police Department on Sunday at around 8 p.m., as Garcia’s truck came into Surf City.
“We located and attempted to stop the vehicle in the downtown Huntington Beach area, but the driver failed to yield,” Carey said. “That initiated a vehicle pursuit. [Police helicopter] HB1 was overhead through the duration of the pursuit, and patrol officer vehicles followed.”
Carey said the suspect appeared to be going in circles in the Long Beach area. After the PIT maneuver, the vehicle was boxed in place, and a high-risk stop was conducted.
No injuries were reported.
Police logs show that Garcia was booked on charges including DUI, marijuana possession, evading a peace officer and driving on a suspended or revoked license.
