Two people were arrested after a pedestrian was killed in Sunset Beach on Sunday night in a hit-and-run collision.

The pedestrian was hit on Pacific Coast Highway, near 24th Street. Huntington Beach Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Carey said police responded to the scene at 6:41 p.m. Sunday and found a 66-year-old male in the street, with injuries indicating he had been hit by a car.

The man, whose name was not released by police, died at the scene.

As the investigation was underway at the scene, Carey said, an adult female approached officers saying she had been the driver of the vehicle, a 2017 gray Jeep Grand Cherokee. She was identified as Kimberly Burch of Surfside, 39.

After she was placed under arrest, police discovered that her husband, 37-year-old Daniel Burch of Surfside, was actually the driver behind the wheel of the Grand Cherokee and fled the scene after allegedly hitting the 66-year-old man.

The couple were taken into custody. It is unknown at this time whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision, Carey said.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the car struck the victim while traveling south on Pacific Coast Highway.

The collision investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the HBPD Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team. Anyone with more information about the incident is asked to contact HBPD traffic investigator Doug Demetre at (714) 536-5670 or investigator Vishal Rattanchandani at (714) 536-5231.
