Felon charged with attempting to kill girlfriend in Huntington Beach

A convicted carjacker was charged Wednesday with keeping a girlfriend captive and attempting to kill her in Huntington Beach.

Conor Bryan Verdun was accused of holding the woman in an apartment against her will at Brookhurst Street and Hamilton Avenue and beating her with a stick Sunday, according to Jennifer Carey of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

Police were called just after 1 a.m. about a disturbance when neighbors heard yelling in the apartment, Carey said. Verdun kept her phone away from her so she could not call for help, Carey said.

The victim was conscious and talking to officers but had sustained “significant injuries” that required hospitalization, Carey said.

Verdun did not enter a plea at his arraignment in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana on Tuesday. He is scheduled to be arraigned March 30.

Verdun is charged with attempted murder, corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, assault with a deadly weapon, dissuading a witness from testifying, criminal threats, false imprisonment, resisting arrest, all felonies, and misdemeanor counts of battery and vandalism and corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant.

Court records show other alleged attacks on June 5, 2020, Sept. 10, 2020, and June 17, 2017.

Verdun pleaded guilty to three felony counts of carjacking in December 2015. He pleaded guilty in July 2010 to two felony counts each of robbery and burglary.
