Shelter-in-place lifted at Dwyer Middle School

A shelter-in-place order was issued at Dwyer Middle School in Huntington Beach on Friday.

Huntington Beach public affairs manager Jennifer Carey said Saturday that the Huntington Beach Police Department responded after Dwyer staff received a suspicious, vague phone call that prompted the shelter in place out of an abundance of caution.

The call made no mention of weapons or immediate threat, Carey said.

Kids started sending texts after the shelter in place happened, she said, which led to miscommunication from officials about suspicious text messages as initially reported on Friday. The cause of the shelter-in-place order was the suspicious phone call.

Staff and students were advised by HBPD to immediately go into a shelter-in-place at about 11 a.m.

The shelter-in-place order at Dwyer was lifted by 1 p.m.
