About 840 graduates said their happy goodbyes to each other on Wednesday in the Fountain Valley commencement ceremony at Huntington Beach High School.

With the grandstands full on either side of the stadium, one might have believed that the Sunset League football title was on the line. As it was, a solid ratio of cellphone cameras to attendees attempted to capture the moment their graduate crossed the stage.

Seniors who achieved at least a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average wore white gowns during the ceremony. Blue and white caps alike went flying into the air when Principal Paul Lopez presented the Class of 2022.

In her graduation speech, senior speaker Janeth Guerrero Salinas asked her classmates where all the time had gone, noting that the coronavirus pandemic had taken time from their high school experience.

The best type of friendships are the ones that we never expect. Four years gave us wonderful friendships that I know I’ll cherish forever.”

Two outstanding vocal performances were turned in by Emily Nguyen and Cameryn Nguyen for the national anthem and alma mater, respectively, and the Fountain Valley symphonic band played “Pomp and Circumstance.”

Magna cum laude graduates stand to be recognized.
