Lagunans ponder their New Year’s resolutions

It’s a question often posed during the first few days of the year: What’s your New Year’s resolution?

Some may set a goal to drop a few pounds or to travel more, and others may disregard the cultural tradition entirely.

In downtown Laguna Beach on Tuesday, locals and tourists alike were laid back when discussing their hopes for 2012.

Fran Muncey, visiting from San Diego, said she’d like to give back more this year.

“I just want to be a better person,” she said.

Muncey owns restaurants in the San Diego area that include Galley at the Marina and Bullseye Burgers and Brew.

Last year was a great year for business, she said, but she’d like to top it.

“We’re very lucky,” she said.

Susie Lawrence of Laguna Beach paused while walking her dogs to contemplate the next 300-something days. She decided to keep it simple.

“I just want to be healthy and happy,” she said.

Fiona Russell, a dog walker in town, said she wants to cut back on her shopping. Clothes and jewelry are her vices.

“I need to stop spending so much on stuff I don’t need,” she said.

When asked how the resolution has been going, Russell responded “so far, not so good,” citing a trip that day to Fashion Island.

She admitted she still has a few days to turn it around.

Dave Kelleher, a retiree who’s lived in Laguna Beach for more than 30 years, said he’s not fond of resolutions.

“Everybody is so goal-oriented,” he said. “Sometimes I think we should just focus on enjoying every day. There aren’t that many bad days around here.”
