Broadway art guidelines approved
Guidelines have been approved for multiple works of art designed to create a gateway to the city.
Funding would come from a federal transportation grant.
The City Council approved the guidelines recommended by the Arts Commission for a competition that includes a sculpture, an artist-designed handrail and seating.
Guidelines and application forms are available on the city’s website at https://www.lagunabeachcity.net.
“Artists from [surrounding] counties are eligible to submit applications,” said Sian Poeschl, city cultural arts manager. “We are trying something new this year. All applications will be made online. Just go to the cultural arts section on the city’s website. This will save the artists and the city money.”
The council also approved a recommendation to commission a team led by Jorg Dubin, who sculpted the 9/11 memorial in Heisler Park, to create additional seating at the bus depot on Broadway, budgeted at $15,000.
Total costs for the beautification project are expected to be $660,000, with $488,000 covered by the grant, which calls for projects including landscaping, sculpture and other art work.
The art component budget is $120,000: a $35,000 honorarium for a sculpture, up to 10 feet tall; $65,000 for the handrail, the design of which should be inspired by the visual transition from the canyon where Broadway begins to the ocean where it terminates; and $15,000 for the seating. The remaining $5,000 will be reserved for online application costs, the finalists’ honorarium plaques and site preparation.
Applications are due May 7.
Artists from Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties are eligible to submit applications. Up to three finalists from Orange County will be selected by an arts commission subcommittee for the council’s review. If approved, the artists be awarded $400 to develop designs.
The competition winner or winners will be decided by the council.
