Karger holds presidential fundraiser
Fred Karger, who has declared himself a Republican candidate for president, is planning a fundraiser at his Laguna Beach home.
“I’m the first openly gay presidential candidate in history,” Karger said.
Karger was recently interviewed by famed British journalist David Frost about his candidacy. For the past year, Karger has been in New Hampshire, Iowa and other states mounting his campaign.
The fundraiser, featuring special guest actor Rib Hillis, will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. June 18 at 155 McAulay Place, Laguna Beach. The cost is $100 per person, or $150 for a couple. Business Club meets Thursday
Rick Cirelli will be the guest speaker at a meeting of the Laguna Beach Business Club at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hotel Laguna.
Cirelli is with RTC Mortgage and has been in the mortgage business for 35 years. He will discuss, “Why housing isn’t better, what’s wrong with the tight underwriting guidelines on mortgages, as well as, what government should or could do.” The cost, including breakfast, is $25. Global Rotarys help Laguna flood victims
The Laguna Beach Rotary Club board has obtained a Rotary International Foundation matching grant to help artists and others in Laguna Canyon who lost property during the Dec. 22 flooding, according to Jerry Immel, a spokesman for the club.
The Laguna club contacted Rotary clubs in Chile Chico, Chile, and Ciudad Delicias, Mexico, and both of the clubs agreed to help fund a grant of $18,400, which will help replace furnishings and appliances for the 13 families identified as being most in need following the flooding. The grant was distributed with the assistance of the Laguna Relief and Resource Center’s Donna Valenti and Ann Quilter. Among the items replaced were refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, sinks, washers, dryers, wall furnaces, vacuum cleaners and home furnishings. Families were delighted with the items, which were presented to them as they were returning to their homes, Immel said in a press release.

Foundation directs gift to hospital
The Laguna Beach Community Foundation has presented a $10,000 donation to Mission Hospital Foundation, Laguna Beach in honor of Lyn Carlyle, according to the Laguna Foundation.
The award was recommended by Donnie Crevier; Darrcy Loveland, CEO; and Laura Tarbox, chairwoman of the Laguna Beach Community Foundation, and presented to Michael Beck, vice president of operations at Mission Hospital, Laguna Beach. The award is from Crevier’s Donor Advised Fund, recently established at the Laguna Beach Community Foundation.

Food Group selling seedlings
It’s not too late to plant a summer garden and Transition Laguna Beach Food Group can help. The Food Group will be at the farmer’s market on Saturday and June 25 selling vegetable seedlings. Seedlings include tomatoes, peppers, arugula, herbs, Swiss chard, lettuce, cilantro and squash, many from seeds harvested in Laguna. All have been organically grown in Laguna Beach, according to Food Group spokeswoman Gloria Broming.
The Food Group’s booth is located at the back of the market on Local’s Lane.
