Boys Scouts and Troops honor U.S. flag

Laguna Beach Troop 35 Boy Scouts and Pack 35 Cub Scouts recently retired flags at Aliso Beach in a ceremony designed to respectfully honor our nation’s flag and inform the scouts about the significance and meaning of the U.S. flag.

Local businesses and residents that wish to have damaged or aged flags retired honorably provide them to the local troops. For the younger boys, Cubmaster Tom Fay cut the flags so that each Cub Scout could participate in the burning and explained the meaning of the 13 stripes (original colonies), 50 stars (all 50 states) and the meaning behind the colors of the flag.

Cub Scouts are made up of boys between first and fifth grade. Laguna Beach Cub Scouts attend all local elementary schools including, Top of the World, El Morro, Anneliesse and St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School. Troop 35 Boy Scouts attend Thurston or Laguna Beach High School. Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts welcome all boys and include camping, practical knowledge of tools, first aid, nature conservation and strong character values.

Adoption of text books

The following texts books are on display for public review weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through July 14 at the Laguna Beach Unified School District’s headquarters, 550 Blumont St.: “A History of Western Society,” (AP European history); “Scholastic Journalism” (Journalism); “Abriedno Paso – Gramatica” (AP Spanish); and “Abriendo Paso” – Lectura (AP Spanish).
