Center, hotel team up for beach day

Pacific Marina Mammal Center and the Villa at Pacific Edge Hotel host a family beach day from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 at 647 S. Coast Hwy. The day includes a barbecue, live music, volleyball and a sand castle building contest.

Lounge chairs, towels and umbrellas and lots of beach toys are complimentary. Tickets are $10 per person, while children younger than 10 get in for free. Reservations are required. ‘Contested Streets’ showing

Transition Consciousness, a subgroup of Transition Laguna and Bike On/Bike Rescue, will host a documentary screening of the film “Contested Streets” from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday at the Woman’s Club, 286 St. Anne’s Drive. The film depicts how cities have reduced auto congestion and made streets safer. Following the film will be an open discussion. All are welcome and encouraged to ride the trolley, bike, walk, bus or carpool. There is a $10 suggested donation.

Friendship Shelter sets fundraiser

The fourth annual “Art of Getting Home” benefit for Friendship Shelter will be held Sept.24 at [seven-degrees], located at 891 Laguna Canyon Road.

The event committee elected to start a new tradition this year of honoring individuals and groups.

[seven-degrees] will be honored for its tradition of assisting Friendship Shelter and other non-profits by keeping fundraising event costs low at its event facility.

Community leaders Ketta and Jeb Brown are being honored for their longstanding commitment to Friendship Shelter and other non-profit organizations, as well as for Ketta’s commitment and service to educational issues in the community.

For the first time, the event will also honor an outstanding graduate of Friendship Shelter’s programs. HonoreeJaymes Gard completed programs at Friendship Shelter and Henderson House, and served the organization as a case manager, night supervisor and volunteer coordinator for four years. In early 2010, he was named general manager of Penguin Café. “Jaymes exemplifies everything we hope for our residents,” said Executive Director Dawn Price. “We are enormously proud of all that he has accomplished.”

Half-price park passes on sale

OC Parks annual day-use passes for regional and wilderness parks and beaches are now available at half the regular price. The passes are valid through Dec. 31.

The discounted annual regional park passes cost $27.50, down from the original price of $55, and include a decal for parking at County of Orange wilderness parks, including Laguna Coast and Aliso and Wood Canyons wilderness parks.

A discounted beach decal sells for $27.50, down from the original $55. It is valid at all County beaches, including Aliso and Salt Creek.

The combination pass, which covers entry and parking for all County regional, wilderness and coastal facilities, is available now for $40, down from $80.

Seniors age 60 or older and disabled persons may purchase discounted annual regional park passes for $17.50 or a beach decal for $27.50 or a combination pass for $25. Disabled persons displaying a DMV placard park for free at County beaches.
