Laguna Beach’s two public elementary schools have been named California Distinguished Schools, according to a news release.

The state’s Department of Education recognized Top of the World and El Morro, along with 422 other elementary schools in California, for their strong commitment and innovative approaches to improving student academic achievement, according to the release.

“I applaud these strong, thriving schools that are making such impressive strides in preparing their students for continued success,” state Supt. of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said in the release. “This award is well-deserved by these school communities for their enduring dedication to high standards, hard work and unwavering support.”

The California Distinguished Schools Program focuses on students’ right to an equitable and rigorous education, and recognizes those schools that have made progress in narrowing the academic achievement gap.

To apply for Distinguished School honors, schools must meet a variety of eligibility criteria.

Once schools are deemed eligible, the Department of Education invites them to apply to be recognized as a California Distinguished School. The process consists of a written application, which includes a description of a school’s two signature practices.

A team of county educators visit each school to see how the practices are implemented. Signature practices are shared with other schools.

Both El Morro and Top of the World had the same two signature practices: response to instruction and positive behavioral intervention and support.

“Response to Instruction is regrouping students to provide them the instruction they need based on where they are at in the curriculum,” El Morro Principal Chris Duddy wrote in an email Friday. “For example, in reading the teachers would group the kids based on their reading level, and they would work on the specific skills the students need.”

Positive behavioral intervention and support allows staff to teach students how to show respect and be responsible to reduce classroom interruptions.

El Morro and Top of the World were also recognized as Distinguished Schools in 2008.

“The El Morro community was excited and thrilled to hear we received this honor,” Duddy wrote. “It validates all the hard work that the staff has put in and that we are doing the right things for our students.”

Top of the World Principal Ron La Motte echoed Duddy’s comment.

Elementary and secondary schools are recognized in alternate years. Schools selected as California Distinguished Schools will be honored in early June during regional award ceremonies.
