Caretaker charged with stealing from elderly woman

An elderly woman’s caretaker was arrested Saturday in connection with the theft of her money and jewelry, Laguna Beach police said.

Authorities charged Lake Forest resident Randy Pasion Sarmiento, 37, with grand theft and financial elder abuse, Laguna Beach Police Department Sgt. Louise Callus wrote in an email.

The woman’s daughter reported at 6:15 p.m. Saturday that $900 in cash and four pieces of jewelry were stolen from a house in the 1100 block of Marine Drive, Callus said.

Officers waited at the house for Sarmiento, who admitted he took the cash and jewelry after working for the family for the past six weeks, Callus said.

Police did not release the ages of the mother or daughter.
