Urth breaks ground at The Cottage site in Laguna
One hundred guests, including city officials, celebrated the beginning of a new chapter for a historic structure in north Laguna Beach on Sunday.
Urth Caffe, which specializes in roasted heirloom organic coffee and custom blended teas, held a groundbreaking for its imminent move to 308 N. Coast Hwy., former home of The Cottage Restaurant.
The Cottage served its hearty breakfasts for nearly 50 years before closing in late 2012. Urth founders Shallom and Jilla Berkman, working with local architect Todd Skenderian, historian Jan Ostashay and contractor Dan Burge, have said they will preserve the property’s historic character during renovation, which will include extending the outdoor patio.
In an email, Shallom Berkman said he hopes to open by December.
The Laguna location will be Urth’s first in Orange County and the company’s only restaurant with a chef on site, Shallom said.
Urth Caffe at the Cottage will also feature an on-site bakery with an extensive range of classic breads, pastries and vegan and gluten-free options.
