A Gardena man was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence after his car hit two vehicles Friday night in South Laguna, injuring a woman, police said.

Hector Chavez, 39, was taken into custody and also charged with hit-and-run, driving without a license and evading police, Sgt. Louise Callus wrote in an email.

Police received reports that a driver heading south on Coast Highway was swerving and speeding around 10:30 p.m., Callus said.

An officer saw the car and turned on his lights to signal him, but the driver failed to yield. The car continued along Coast Highway and struck two moving vehicles near West Street, according to police.

One of the cars that was hit struck a pedestrian railing in front of Laguna Royale condominiums, Callus said.

The woman in the car, a 65-year-old Dana Point resident, was hospitalized with neck, hands and shoulder pain.

Chavez continued south and eventually pulled over on Seacove Drive, where officers, with guns drawn, detained him, Callus said.

The driver of the car headed north on Coast Highway was not injured, police said.
