Laguna lifeguards score well in competition

Laguna Beach lifeguards took a few first-place finishes in individual events as the team won third overall among 19 agencies in the California Surf Lifesaving Assn. regional competition at Huntington State Beach on July 26, according to the city’s website.

Led by team captain Gina Nourmohamadian, Laguna Beach’s Marine Safety Department, which had 26 athletes, finished first in its division, outscoring the fourth-place team, Huntington Beach.

Ally McCormick led Laguna in points earned, while Mitchell Spezzaferri finished first overall in the men’s run-swim-run. Cameron Zuziak took the top spot in the men’s 2K run.

Tommy Cantrell and Casey Parlette placed first in the land-line competition, in which a lifeguard swims out to a person while a colleague pulls the two back to shore.
