Recycle bins heading to Main Beach

The city recently purchased 15 containers to collect recyclables on Main Beach, according to a news release.

The containers, made of the same concrete material as existing receptacles downtown, have been ordered and are expected to be delivered by the middle of November. Total cost was $9,000, paid for by state CalRecycle grant funds, the release said.

For the time being, five temporary plastic recycling containers have been placed in the area until permanent ones arrive.

The containers will be monitored to measure how much uncontaminated recycling content is recovered. If this pilot program proves to be successful, then additional containers can be placed in other public places using the same CalRecycle grant funds.

Currently, all waste and bulky items collected from the beaches, parks and streets are sorted and processed at Waste Management’s Sunset Environmental Facility in Irvine in an effort to maximize the amount of waste that is diverted from the landfills and recycled.
