Is your smoke detector working? Laguna Fire Department offers batteries, alarms
The Laguna Beach Fire Department is urging residents to ensure that their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms work properly and are installed in correct locations.
The outreach coincides with the National Fire Protection Assn.’s Fire Prevention Week, titled “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives,” which concludes Saturday.
On average, about 60% of fire-related deaths result from blazes in homes that have no smoke alarms or that have smoke alarms that were not working properly, according to a news release.
Laguna residents know all too well about fire. Twenty-one years ago this month, a blaze destroyed or damaged 411 homes, charred 14,337 acres and caused about $528 million in damage, according to an Orange County Fire Department report at the time. The agency is now known as the Orange County Fire Authority.
The city Fire Department offers free batteries, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms for residents of Laguna. For more information, visit lagunabeachcity.net.
The department will offer tours at the city’s four stations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. A list of stations can be seen on the city’s website.
