Proposed city charter meeting set for Monday

The public’s last chance is Monday to amend a proposed city charter for Costa Mesa that’s expected to go on the June primary ballot.

The second official charter meeting will start at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 77 Fair Drive.

The charter was proposed by Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer, who argues that the document — much like a city constitution — would give the city greater control over local issues. The move would save the city money and the ability to outsource city services, Righeimer argues.

Critics contend that it’s a power play by the council, which is pushing through dramatic changes to the city’s operations.

The public will have a final opportunity Monday to suggest additions and deletions from the proposed document before it would get a final up or down vote by the council in March. If the council approves it then, the charter could appear on the June ballot for voter approval.
