Former Balboa Yacht Club member was involved, creative

Virginia Marquis Lockabey, an avid boater, community volunteer and longtime member of the Balboa Yacht Club, has died. She was 99.

Lockabey, who lived in Newport Beach for 45 years, died Saturday of natural causes in Los Gatos, Calif., where she had recently moved.

In addition to her time spent on the water,

Lockabey volunteered with troubled youth as a member of the East Bluff Covenant Group, her daughter, Lura Lockabey Halbert, said in an e-mail.

Lockabey was married to Al Lockabey, a former Daily Pilot boating editor. She was his first mate and decorated every boat the two owned, Lockabey Halbert said.

As a member of the Balboa Yacht Club, Lockabey organized various events, including fashion shows.

She was also an active “room mother” in her children’s classes and was involved in her kids’ Scouting activities, Lockabey Halbert said.

In addition to her daughter,

Lockabey is survived by son Logan Lockabey, a Newport Beach lifeguard for about 20 years who still lives in Newport Beach; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, with a sixth expected in September.

“She was always interested in other people,” Lockabey Halbertsaid. “She knew all the social graces. She was artistic. She would have been a wonderful interior decorator. She was very creative.”

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions to the San Jose Hospice or a local Humane Society for canine services.
