Bernice Hazel Clausen Lykke May 13, 1918 - July 11, 2010
Bernice Hazel Clausen Lykke passed away peacefully July 11, 2010, at the age of 92, in Corona del Mar. She was born in Templeton, Calif., on May 13, 1918, to Lulu Johnson Clausen and Fritz Olaf Clausen in the Templeton Hotel, which was their home and the site of their business. She was the youngest of four children. She attended Templeton High School, trained in a nursing program and became a nurse’s aide for the Red Cross in the early World War II years. For many years she was the assistant to Al Rhodes, the superintendent of schools, in San Luis Obispo.
Bernice met Donald Lykke at a Cal Poly dance and they were married April 3, 1942, in San Luis Obispo. Capt. Lykke became an airline pilot for Pan American World Airways and flew for 36 years. He passed away July 6, 2005. Don and Bernice were married for 63 years. They were residents of Saratoga, Calif., for 50 years.
Bernice was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed playing the piano, cooking, sewing and gardening. Family was important to Bernice, and she kept the fires burning at home during the many years that her husband was away flying. She was involved with her children’s school and athletic activities. She accompanied Don and their children on many flights all over the world.
Beloved mother of Carol (Dwight) Hudson of Newport Beach and Chris (Mary Jane) Lykke of Mountain View, Calif. Grandchildren Brett, Bryan (Karen) Guthrie, Stephen (Carly) Lykke, Kathy and Scott Lykke. Great-grandsons Devin Guthrie and Mason Lykke, beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. July 20, 2010, and a service at 10 a.m. July 21, 2010, at Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home, 1703 Spring St., Paso Robles, Calif.
