Deadline for Newport library teen writing contest extended

The deadline for submissions to the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation’s teen creative writing contest has been extended to Monday.

The foundation’s executive director and sole full-time employee Tracey Keys said Wednesday that the contest’s deadline was pushed ahead to encourage more young writers to participate and have a chance at the $250 grand prize.

“We just wanted to give participants the extra time,” she said, “because it is a holiday weekend and everyone’s gearing up for school next week, so we wanted to give everyone the benefit of the weekend to finish their writing.”

Keys, who’s been with the foundation for 16 years, oversees its programming, fundraising, public relations and administration, as well as board developments and volunteer recruitment.

In addition to the $250, the winner’s manuscript will be published online at nbplfoundation.org and in the foundation’s quarterly newsletter, the Bookmark, which is sent to more than 2,500 readers.

Guidelines for the contest — open to any local public or private high school student who also has a Newport Beach Public Library card — state that applicants are to submit their fictional short stories of 2,500 words or less to tkeys@newportbeachca.gov.

Submission themes must be set in a library, feature a library-themed element or in some way revolve around a library.
