James Dale Going Sept. 10, 1919 - Aug. 25, 2010

James Dale Going, a longtime Newport Beach resident, passed away Aug. 25, 2010.

Jim was born Sept. 10, 1919, in Chicago. He was the only child of James Dale Going I and Laura Ann Randecker, who were part of a touring Vaudeville Theatre group. The family settled in Los Angeles, where Jim attended Los Angeles High School and City College.

While serving in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and Alaska, where he worked on the Alcan Highway.

After the war, Jim worked as an advertising manager for the Peterson Publishing Co. in Hollywood. Sea Magazine was one of his favorite accounts, as he was a boat enthusiast and fisherman. Jim moved his family from Los Angeles to Lido Island in 1972, where he could be found on Lido’s tennis courts and Newport Beach Country Club’s golf course with his wife, Ginger. He played tennis well into his 80s and was a devoted Angels fan.

Known for his sense of humor, playful and lighthearted attitude, his melodic whistle could always be heard by those around him. Jim was easily recognized by his dark tan, white hair and bright warm smile. He taught his family and friends to love life and live it to the fullest. Jim passed away two weeks before his 91st birthday.

Jim was preceded in death by Ginger, (Virginia Jones Going). He is survived by his sons James Going III of Studio City and Scott Going of Martinez; daughters Linda Mitchell of Walnut Creek, Susan Mathieu of San Clemente and Stacey Taylor of Woodland; his grandchildren Geoffrey Going, Chris and Jaime Mitchell, Drew and Mitch Mathieu, Kyle and Chris Molina, Madison and Whitney Taylor; and one great grandchild, Kendra Lee Mitchell.

He is also survived by Fran LeFever (and her family), a close family friend and loving companion of 17 years. The couple spent their golden years together playing golf, traveling and socializing with friends and family, as well as enjoying their many grandchildren.

A private gathering is planned for family members for a memorial at sea. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Jim Going to Out-Patient Treatment- Hoag Hospital Cancer Center, Newport Beach.
