School board to consider superintendent consulting contract

The school board Tuesday will consider keeping a former superintendent on in an advisory capacity.

The Board of Education is expected to consider contracting former Supt. Rob Barbot as an advisor through 2015 to provide guidance to the district and current Supt. Fred Navarro, who started in August.

Barbot could not advise Navarro more than 15 hours a month, according to the agenda.

Barbot served as the district’s top administrator for eight years until his retirement in June 2006. He came back this year as interim superintendent to head the search for a permanent replacement for former Supt. Jeffrey Hubbard, who was fired in January.

Barbot would be employed as an independent contractor through Sept. 30, 2015, at a cost of $9,000 annually to continue his medical, dental and vision insurance starting after the 2012-13 fiscal year. His contract also calls for reimbursement for certain travel costs related to his position.

Schools rewarded for savings

The district will also distribute a $44,378 award among 19 schools — half of the savings the schools shaved off utilities costs through green practices.

The schools participated in the 2011-12 Alliance to Save Energy’s Green Schools Program for the second year. The program educates and trains students in energy efficiency.

The participating schools cut down energy consumption by an average of 10% to reduce the district’s energy costs by about $88,756.

Corona del Mar High School cut the most at $17,144. Newport Harbor High School cut $15,271 and Estancia High School reduced its bill by $8,646.

At the elementary level, Whittier saved the most this year with $5,851, followed by Mariners with $4,705 and Harbor View with $3,402.

The schools will receive half of their savings from the district.
