JWA bridge set to be occupied

COSTA MESA — Calling for a massive day of action, MoveOn.org is calling for local Occupy Wall Street supporters to join them Thursday night on the bridge that connects MacArthur Boulevard and John Wayne Airport.

A post on MoveOn’s Occupy Irvine and South Orange County page read, “We’ll rally at crumbling bridges, understaffed schools and other sites that show the local symptoms of a failed economy — the very places that can also create millions of new jobs.”

According to Transportation for America, a coalition of various interest groups pushing for a national transportation plan, the MacArthur Boulevard-John Wayne Airport bridge is rated as deficient, meaning it requires significant maintenance.

MoveOn is calling for people to occupy the bridge, 18622 MacArthur Blvd., from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

The day marks the two-month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement, a demonstration that started in New York and within weeks, had spread across the nation and the world. The movement has yet to have a clearly defined message or hierarchy, with Occupy Wall Street groups sprouting up nationwide, but all commonly rail against growing economic inequality and decry the influence of big business in government.
