Harlan Wendell Hoyt
March 9, 1930 to September 8, 2013

Harlan was born March 9, 1930, an only child to proud parents Wendell and Lois Hoyt. He was raised in Riverside, California until age sixteen when the family moved to Newport Beach. Harlan soon became an avid sailor, crewing in many races to Mexico and Hawaii. He and close friends were instrumental in starting the sailing club for Orange Coast College. Harlan served six years in the Naval Reserve.
Harlan and Nancy were married in Corona del Mar on April 11, 1953. They became the proud parents of Cheri, Tom and Judy. The family lived in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach where the children grew up and attended school. Harlan worked in the graphic arts industry until he retired at age sixty five. The Hoyt family, as well as several of the grandchildren attended Mariners Church for many years. Harlan and Nancy were actively involved at Mariners for forty six years. Harlan always served – whether it be singing in the choir, ushering, helping in preparation for the services and counting the offering each week.
The Hoyts have many long-time friends in Orange County with whom they have kept in contact since moving to Newberg, Oregon in October, 2011 to live with their son-in-law and daughter. They have made many new friends while attending a Christ centered church, an exercise class, and Harlan; a woodworking group.
Harlan went home to be with his Lord on September 8, 2013 where there is “joy in His presence and the pleasures of living with Him forever”. He is survived by his wife Nancy, daughter Cheri Hoyt, son Tom Hoyt and daughter-in-law Kris, daughter Judy Travers and son-in-law Bob, as well as six grandsons. Harlan was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed! A service in memory of Harlan will be held on Monday, October 21 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Mariner’s Church located at 5001 Newport Coast Drive, Irvine.
