John “Tyler” Perineau Macdonald, Jr.
After a long and passion filled life, we say goodbye to John Tyler Perineau Macdonald, Jr. B. Atlanta, Georgia, March 25th, 1924, D. Gig Harbor, Washington, July 7th, 2013 at the age of 89.
Tyler attended the University of Southern California having earned Scholarships in both Debate and Football. He won numerous speech / public speaking championships for the school and the State of California. He served with the USMCR from 1942 to 1944.
Tyler’s work as a copywriter at the advertising agency Hixson and Jorgensen in Los Angeles led to his position as Chairman and CEO of Ayer/Jorgensen/Macdonald when the company was acquired by N.W. Ayer, New York in 1968. He additionally became Executive V.P. and Director of the parent company. He served as General Manager of the Pacific Coast Group of Ayer Companies and Ayer’s Far East Operations and Subsidiaries. In 1947, an N.W. Ayer copywriter, Frances Gerety, coined the phrase “A Diamond is Forever” for her main account De Beers, which in 1999 was named by Advertising Age as “The Slogan of the Century”.
Sailor, Writer, Public Speaker, Creative Director, he was voted “Advertising Executive of the year” by the Western States Advertising Association in 1973. He introduced new brands into the United States, including Toyota, Yamaha, Kubota, and Noritake. He was President of the Sales and Marketing Executives Association in Los Angeles, and Vice President and Chairman of the Public Action Committee of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. He was President of the Ephebian Society ( L.A.’s honorary scholastic society). He was Chairman of Mayor Tom Bradley’s Economic Advisory Council, the Los Angeles City’s Bi-Centennial Celebration, and a member of the Board of Counselors USC Institute of Marine and Oceanographic Studies in 1978. He was Commodore of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club in 1981.
He and his wife Mary Lou, lived in Newport Beach, California and on Catalina Island before moving to Santa Fe New Mexico (1983) and Gig Harbor Washington (1990) where they enjoyed salmon fishing aboard their Tiderunner, “Six Gun”.
He is Survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Lou Krouse (“the best thing that ever happened to me”) and three Macdonald children, Priscilla Ann Maloney, John Tyler Perineau Macdonald- Brandon III, and Peter Robert Macdonald. There are also eight grandchildren who live respectively in France, (Josephine, Sabine, Delphine, Vincent) Reno Nevada, (Tobin, Molly and Rory), Newport Beach, California (William “Tyler”), and one great grandson, France (John Philippe Pierre Perineau Chabanier Macdonald). Another daughter Sheridan, Predeceased him in 1972.
