Run will raise cash, burn calories
Anyone worried about consuming too many calories at this weekend’s Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club Fish Fry won’t have to go far to work them off.
Runners and walkers can join the sixth annual Costa Mesa Community Run, which takes place Sunday along with the annual $10 Fish Fry at Fairview Park.
“There’s a race for every level and something for everyone,” said Karen Barloon, president of the Costa Mesa Community Run. “Think of it as a cross-country course through a park.”
More than 800 runners and walkers participated last year in the 2K, 5K and 10K events, which raised $21,000 and benefited Costa Mesa public schools.
The race, which is teaming up with the Fish Fry for the first time, starts and finishes at Estancia High School’s Jim Scott Stadium and loops around Fairview Park and part of Talbert Regional Park along the eastern bank of the Santa Ana River.
Participants will receive a T-shirt and goodie bags and first place winners in the 5K and 10K will receive a $250 gift certificate for IKEA.
The event officially kicks off Saturday with the Costa Mesa Community Run Expo, where participants can register for the races from 5 to 8 p.m. Runners can also register the day of the event beginning at 6:30 a.m.
Registration fees are $30, $35 and $40 for the 2K, 5K and 10K, respectively. A $5 pancake breakfast will also be available.
The 5K and 10K races start at 8 a.m. and the 2K starts at 9 a.m. Sunday. Free parking is available at Estancia High.
