A UC Irvine student may have saved a woman’s life Thursday evening when he stopped a man who was stabbing his ex-girlfriend in a campus parking lot, according to a university official.

The male student intervened when he saw a man attacking the female student about 5 p.m. near the Vista del Campo Norte student housing facility, campus spokeswoman Laura Rico said.

The attacker stabbed the woman multiple times before the male student called police and held the assailant at the scene, Rico said. She said the attacker is not affiliated with the campus. She did not identify either student.

Officers from the UC Irvine Police Department arrested Rosendo Aguilar, 22, of Solana Beach and booked him into Orange County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, Rico said. He is being held with bail set at $2 million and is due in court Monday, according to jail records.

Paramedics treated the woman, who was bleeding from her wounds, and took her to a trauma center in Santa Ana in moderate condition, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.

Concialdi said paramedics also treated Aguilar for minor injuries.

Campus officials could not immediately provide information on a possible motive for the stabbing.

“I don’t what precipitated it or what occurred beforehand,” Rico said.
