An Anaheim man was found guilty Monday of following his estranged wife into an Irvine cul-de-sac and fatally shooting her nine times in the chest, the Orange County district attorney’s office said.

A jury convicted John Agosta, 37, on one felony count of murder and a sentencing enhancement for personal discharge of a firearm causing death, according to news release from the office.

In 2011, Agosta waited outside a Turtle Rock preschool where his wife, 28-year-old Alejandra Hernandez, worked. When she left for lunch, he followed her in his Ford Mustang.

When she stopped a half mile away and got out of the car, Agosta shot her and returned to his own car but was unable to start it. He went back to the body, turned it over with his foot and then fled, according to the district attorney’s office.

Irvine police arrested Agosta at a friend’s home in Mission Viejo later that day.

Agosta faces a minimum of 50 years to life in state prison at his Aug. 30 sentencing.
