Rescuers fought 4- to 5-foot waves over the weekend to save two people trapped in a rocky area below Big Corona and Little Corona beaches, officials said.

An 18-year-old woman from Santa Ana and a man, believed to be 19 or 20, from Los Angeles, were trapped about 7:25 p.m. Saturday, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department.

Ten Newport Beach Fire Department personnel, including paramedics and lifeguards, immediately entered the water, some on paddleboards.

The woman suffered a head injury and was taken by paddleboard to an awaiting boat.

Both the woman and man were taken to Hoag Hospital, officials said.

The high surf tossed rescuers against the rocks. The firefighters suffered scrapes and one lifeguard captain suffered cuts, swelling and bruising to his arms and legs, according to the department.

Fifteen personnel from the Fire Department, Newport Beach Marine Department and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol aided in the rescue.
