Seriously ill children celebrate the Fourth of July in Newport Harbor

Forty children battling life-threatening illnesses celebrated the Fourth of July by cruising in a yacht along Newport Harbor.

The children, from Make-A-Wish Foundation, boarded an Electra Cruises yacht along with Orange County Sheriff’s Department volunteers from the harbor patrol, reserves and explorers. They played games, danced, made patriotic-themed crafts and had their faces painted.

Later, the boat made a quick stop at the American Legion Post 291, where the kids had pancakes.

“It is our distinct pleasure to be able to participate in this event each year with Make-A-Wish Foundation and bring a few hours of joy and respite to the children and their families,” Sheriff Sandra Hutchens wrote in a prepared statement.
