ESPN moves golf tournament from Trump’s course to Pelican Hill in Newport

Following Donald Trump’s critical public comments about Latino immigrants, ESPN announced this week that it will move its upcoming ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic from Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes to Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport Beach.

ESPN explained in a statement that it decided it was appropriate to switch its charity golf event from Trump’s the Los Angeles golf club to Pelican Hill in support of “inclusion of all sports fans.”

The ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic, scheduled for July 14, benefits The V Foundation’s Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund, which provides resources for cancer research for minority populations, including Latinos and African Americans, according to the organization.

Scott was a longtime ESPN anchor before he died from cancer in January at age 49.

ESPN’s move makes it one of several companies, including PGA of America, NBC, Univision and Macy’s, to distance itself from the 2016 Republican presidential candidate.

Trump used his June presidential announcement to lambaste Mexico for sending criminals across the U.S. border.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best … they’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us,” Trump said. “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

The cable sports company did not specifically address Trump’s comments in its statement.

“Our decision reflects our deep feelings for our former colleague and support for inclusion of all sports fans,” the statement reads. “Diversity and inclusion are core values at ESPN and our decision also supports that commitment.”
