Police to crack down on impaired drivers

As summer winds down, the Costa Mesa Police Department and other agencies are cracking down on impaired motorists.

As part of that effort, Costa Mesa police will set up a checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the city the night of Aug. 30, the department announced Tuesday.

“The end of summer and Labor Day weekend is traditionally a time to have fun,” Sgt. Bryan Wadkins said in a prepared statement. “Don’t let it turn into a time of tragedy or a visit to our jails by driving impaired with alcohol or drugs.”

Costa Mesa’s checkpoint will be manned by officers specially trained to detect motorists who are driving under the influence, according to police.

“We will be out there looking for anyone making that unwise and dangerous decision,” Wadkins said.
