Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County raised more than $1 million during a dinner last week in Newport Beach.

Thursday’s event, the organization’s annual Gourmet Dinner at the Balboa Bay Resort, broke records for the Santa Ana-based nonprofit, which aids children from single-parent or low-income families by partnering them with a mentoring network and adult volunteers.

“We work every day with an incredible group of leaders and volunteers throughout the community who give so generously of their time and resources,” Melissa Beck, chief executive of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, said in a statement. “Our Gourmet Dinner is the centerpiece of our year, not only in terms of fundraising but as a celebration and look ahead. We are extremely grateful to everyone who attended and participated in the event.”

Stephanie Argyros joins We Day California

Newport Beach resident Stephanie Argyros was recently selected as co-chairwoman of We Day California, a youth empowerment event scheduled for April 7 at the Forum in Inglewood.

Argyros will work with area schools to “celebrate and inspire this generation’s shift from ‘me’ to ‘we’ — toward acting with intention, leading with compassion and a belief in the power of community,” according to a news release.

The effort will include encouraging students in Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and Irvine to commit to a local or global service project as part of the “We Schools” challenge. Those who fulfill it will receive tickets to the April event.
