Lobsters use escape claws at fishing tournament

It was a red October of a different sort Saturday afternoon as freedivers went on the hunt for lobsters in a tournament at Little Corona Beach in Corona del Mar.

The event, titled the Lob-Off, was presented by OC Spearos, a nonprofit spearfishing and freediving club based in Costa Mesa, and Urt clothing company.

Divers without air tanks tried for prizes for catching the biggest spiny lobster, the most legal lobsters and the heaviest lobster.

To enter the contest, divers had to have a fishing permit and a lobster report card and measuring device.
