Police search for Costa Mesa bank robber

An bespectacled bank robber stuffed cash in his pocket before fleeing a Citibank in Costa Mesa about noon Wednesday, authorities said.

Police said a teller handed over money when a man in his 30s walked up to the counter with a note reading, “This is a robbery.”

Witnesses told police they didn’t see the man brandish a weapon.

After putting the money in a pants pocket, the man headed out the front door of the bank at 234 E. 17th St., police said.

Bystanders watched as the robber head north toward the rear of the bank, but they quickly lost sight of him and didn’t notice any getaway car, according to police. Officers searched the area but came up empty.

Police described the robber as white and about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build. Authorities said he wore a white and gray baseball cap, a blue button-down shirt, baggy black shorts, white tennis shoes and frameless prescription glasses.

Police asked that anyone with information about the case call Costa Mesa detectives at (714) 754-5205.
