Around Town: Tall ships coming to Newport

Fans of maritime history will want to head to Newport Harbor next week to see two 18th century replica tall ships offering dockside tours or adventurous sails.

The Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain of Grays Harbor Historical Seaport will be in Newport Beach from Wednesday to Feb. 5.

The Lady Washington, a brig with a mast height of 89 feet, appeared in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” The Hawaiian Chieftain is a gaff-rigged topsail ketch with a mast height of 75 feet.

Daily tours will be offered through Feb. 4 for a $5 donation. Times vary. Family friendly “adventure” and “battle” sails with ship handling demonstrations and amusements will be held on the weekend with tickets ranging from $42 to $79. The ships are closed to visitors on Monday, and on Feb. 6 will set sail for Oxnard.

Children visit Newport police headquarters

Children from the Junior League of Orange County in Newport Beach visited the Police Department Jan. 21, according to a news release.

Seventeen children and their parents and guardians toured the facility. They saw juvenile holding cells, the squad room, the gun-cleaning room and 911 dispatch call center while learning about police officer training and activities.

They also received police coloring books, badges and toy whistles.
