Around Town: Surfing museum to open ‘Surf 2 Skate’ exhibit

The International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach will celebrate its new “Surf 2 Skate” exhibit with an opening event from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The exhibit includes a collection of boards and other artifacts from surfing and skateboarding.

Opening night is scheduled to feature surf and skate stars sharing stories.

Tickets to the event are $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 5-16 and free for kids 4 and younger.

All proceeds will go to the nonprofit museum, 411 Olive Ave.

Mayor to speak at Wake Up Newport breakfast

Thursday’s Wake Up Newport breakfast will feature Newport Beach Mayor Marshall “Duffy” Duffield.

His topics will include city goals for 2018 and “residentialation” of the waterfront.

The event will be held from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. in the Friends Room of the Newport Beach Public Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.

Ocean View School District music festival Thursday

The Ocean View School District’s annual music festival will showcase more than 400 student performers at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Marine View Middle School in Huntington Beach.

Families and other community members are invited to attend the free festival, which will feature vocal, dance, instrumental and group performances.

Deadline nears to sign up for golf tournament to aid homeless

The deadline is Friday to register for a March 9 golf tournament in Costa Mesa to raise funds to help homeless people.

The event, presented by Fresh Beginnings Ministries and the city’s Network for Homeless Solutions, will be held at Costa Mesa Country Club.

The cost is $125 per player or $425 per foursome. A silent auction and a raffle also will be held.

Proceeds are intended to help people in Costa Mesa who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Pokémon Regional Championships come to Costa Mesa

Hundreds of prospective Pokémon masters will go head to head and deck to deck this weekend in the 2018 Pokémon Regional Championships at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.

Players of the Pokémon trading card and video games will compete for a share of up to $50,000 in prizes as well as points toward qualifying for the World Championships this summer.

The regional at the fairgrounds runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It is open to the public and free to attend.

Tattoo fundraiser to benefit Down Syndrome Assn. of Orange County

Gold Rush Tattoo in Costa Mesa will hold a pair of fundraising events to benefit the Down Syndrome Assn. of Orange County.

From noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and March 21, visitors can choose from among specially priced tattoos, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the association and its programs.

Holi festival in Huntington Beach will benefit children’s charity

Child Rights and You Orange County will celebrate Holi, a Hindu spring festival known as the Festival of Colors, with a public fundraising event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Bolsa Chica State Beach, 17851 Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach.

The event will feature Bollywood music and Indian snacks and lunch.

Tickets are $15 per person, or free for children younger than 6. Online group rates are four tickets for $50 or 10 for $100.

Proceeds will go to Child Rights and You America, a nonprofit that promotes education, healthcare and protection from exploitation and abuse for underprivileged children.

Lantern Festival at Segerstrom Center on Sunday

The Pacific Symphony invites the public to its third annual Lantern Festival on Sunday at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ Julianne and George Argyros Plaza in Costa Mesa.

The event, presented in partnership with the South Coast Chinese Cultural Assn./Irvine Chinese School, commemorates the end of the Lunar New Year.

The free festival will run from noon to 6 p.m. and include music and dance groups, a lantern parade, Chinese folk dancing and food trucks.

Friendship Shelter fundraiser set in Laguna Beach

Skyloft restaurant in Laguna Beach will host a “Rock for the Cause” fundraiser on Monday to benefit the Friendship Shelter for the homeless.

The event, from 6 to 10 p.m., will feature live music by Laguna Beach’s 133 Band, plus drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

Tickets are $75 to $150.

BMX riding demonstration coming to H.B.

The Kimpton Shorebreak Hotel in Huntington Beach will present a Vans BMX rider demonstration from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. March 6.

The 5th & PCH retail and restaurant center at 155 Fifth St. will close the roadway to traffic as BMX riders who may compete in the 2020 Olympics show their skills.

Admission is free.
