A Costa Mesa man was sentenced Friday to life in state prison without possibility of parole for murdering his ex-girlfriend’s father and trying to murder her brother in 2009, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.

Alwyn Gibson II, 33, was convicted in November of murder and attempted murder. The same month, a jury also found him legally sane.

The convictions stemmed from the evening of Feb. 20, 2009, when Gibson entered the Irvine home of his former girlfriend’s family while they were having dinner, prosecutors said. His ex-girlfriend no longer lived there and wasn’t present.

Prosecutors said Gibson demanded money from the family and placed a large piece of fruit over the barrel of a gun he was carrying to stifle the sound of shots.

Gibson forced the former girlfriend’s father — De Ngoc Le, 60 — and one of her brothers, Michael Le, into an upstairs bedroom and ordered them to lie on the floor.

He then fatally shot De Ngoc Le in the back of the head and wounded Michael Le in the back of the neck. The younger Le was hospitalized for days, according to authorities.

Prosecutors said Gibson also shot his ex-girlfriend’s mother once in an arm.

Michael Le’s brother escaped and ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911, according to prosecutors.

An Irvine police SWAT team responded to the house, and Gibson surrendered early the next morning after an hours-long standoff.
