Laguna Beach’s Woods Cove reopens after sewage spill

A portion of the ocean known as Woods Cove in Laguna Beach has reopened after being closed because of a spill of about 500 gallons of raw sewage, the Orange County Health Care Agency said Thursday.

The spill, which affected the water between Center Street and Moss Street, was reported Sunday. The Health Care Agency closed the area to all water activities that evening through Wednesday.

A sewer line that became blocked because of tree roots and flushable wipes caused sewage to back up and flow out of a manhole cover at the intersection of Ruby Street and South Coast Highway and into a storm drain, officials said.
