MILLENNIUM MOMENT

David Nielsen is most remembered for being a doctor who cared. Believing

that proper medical care was too expensive for some people, Nielsen spent

many years at Hoag Hospital as an advocate for needy patients. He

voluntarily conducted heart examinations for Newport Harbor High School

students and educated the public on lifesaving techniques. It was no

surprise that Nielsen was named 1959 Man of the Year by the Newport

Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

Committed to community service as well as medicine, Nielsen served as

president of the Newport Harbor Kiwanis Club, where he had 13 years of

perfect attendance.

Sadly, his life was cut short by liver cancer at age 49 in 1969. Just a

few months earlier he had been named Man of the Decade by Hoag Hospital

for his service to the medical profession and the community.

MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who made a major contribution to

the Newport-Mesa community this century.
