GAINS

RIDING THE WAVES

A six-week surf competition came to a close in West Newport last week --

the Volcom Star Fish Surf Series. The event gave surfers of all ages the

opportunity to show their stuff. “It felt good, and I got a new board,”

said 22-year-old Josh Hoyer, a finalist in the open division.

TIME FOR TEE

Marianne Towersey walked away once again with a sparkling sterling silver

tea pot, the prize for the winner of the third annual Tea Cup Classic,

played Friday at the Mesa Verde Country Club. Towersey, last year’s

winner, arrived at Country Club all warmed up -- she came straight from

another championship earlier in the day at the Mission Viejo Country

Club.

RECOGNIZING HISTORY

Costa Mesa has reacted favorably to the idea of drafting an ordinance

designed to protect the city’s historical buildings. The council hired a

consultant to scout the community and compose a list of sites for

consideration. The council will begin holding public hearings on the

matter probably in October.

LOSSES

FAIRVIEW PARK FUNDING

Costa Mesa city officials are feeling the pressure to decide on specific

plans for Fairview Park. If they don’t to it soon, they may lose out on

grant opportunities -- and no one seems to want that. Said Councilwoman

Libby Cowan: “The time has come when we need to say, ‘We have the master

plan, where are we going, what are we doing, how long is it going to

take?’ ”

UNDER INVESTIGATION

A 31-year-old Costa Mesa man was arrested on suspicion of child

molestation. Police believe Roger Rodriguez may have sexually abused a

12-year-old boy who was with him and preparing to travel to Mexico with

Rodriguez when authorities arrived at his Santa Ana Avenue apartment.
