BEAUTY PAGEANT

Girls and boys can compete in the 18th biannual Huntington Beach Beauty

Pageant set for Saturday at the Huntington Center.

The pageant will be separated into four categories: Miss and Mr.

Beautiful, Cover Girl and Boy, All American Girl and Boy, and Miss and

Mr. Photogenic.

Divisions are open for girls up to their teens and boys up to 10 years

old. Each participant will receive a trophy, a pageant program and

balloons, and the winners will have their entry fees paid to compete in

the Miss and Mr. California state pageant.

FOURTH VACANCY

The city of Huntington Beach is looking to fill a vacancy on it Fourth of

July Executive Board, which is responsible for raising funds for and

coordinating the presentation of the city’s annual Fourth of July Parade

and related activities.

The seven-member board receives staff support from the Community Services

Department.

PERSONNEL ISSUES

The city of Huntington Beach seeks candidates to fill a vacancy on the

Personnel Commission and to serve through June 2001.

The seven-member commission is an advisory board for the City Council and

City Administration on personnel matters. It has final authority on

appeals regarding employee disciplinary actions and grievances. The group

meets at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.

Applications are available at the City Council office on the fourth floor

of City Hall, 2000 Main St., or by mail by calling 536-5553.

MAKING A SPLASH

The Orange County Water District was named a 1999 Groundwater Guardian

National Partner by the National Groundwater Foundation, the district

announced Aug. 4.

The district joins the ranks of other such National Partners as

McDonald’s, Dupont Agricultural Products and Cargill Corp.

The district was honored for its support in producing a nationwide ground

water protection public service announcement featuring Jan Schlichtmann,

the attorney portrayed by John Travolta in the movie “A Civil Action,”

for hosting the first mini-water festival at the 1998 Groundwater Guardian National Conference, and for other achievements. The Schlictmann

announcement urges communities to protect their ground water.

HOUSING ASSISTANCE

Rental housing assistance applications are available at the Huntington

Beach and Fountain Valley city halls and must be submitted between Monday

and Aug. 31.

The countywide program subsidizes payments for low-income families and

individuals who earn less than 50% of the median income, including the

elderly, disabled and poor.

Applications will be accepted by mail at the address listed on the form.

Only one application per family is accepted.

Development Department’s Web site, o7 www.oc.ca.gov/housingf7 .

Huntington Beach City Hall is at 2000 Main St. Fountain Valley City Hall

is at 10200 Slater Ave.

EXPO EXCITEMENT

The Expo Design Centers in Huntington Beach and Monrovia raised more than

$21,000 at a Make-A-Wish Foundation event last month.

The Edinger Avenue store, which opened last month, is a full-service

interior design center.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a nonprofit organization that makes wishes

of children with serious illnesses come true. The foundation that serves

Los Angeles and Orange County has helped more than 5,100 children.

JAIL BAIT

The Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach will participate

in Surf City Executive Lock-Up on Wednesday to benefit the Muscular

Dystrophy Assn.

Association officials and business and community leaders will be

voluntarily put behind bars to raise bail.

The association is a nonprofit group that provides support groups,

medical care, research and a summer camp to Orange County children and

adults with neuromuscular diseases.

NEW STORE

The Office Depot superstore in Fountain Valley relocated to a new

25,000-square-foot building at 18100 Brookhurst St. An official grand

opening was held Monday.

CLINICAL AID

The Huntington Beach Community Clinic received $49,686 for ongoing

support of its medical and mental health services, as well as outreach

and educational programs the health center provides to the community. It

also received a $30,000 grant for maintenance and repairs to the

10,000-square-foot facility. Both of grants were approved by the City

Council under the Community Development Block Grant program, provided by

the federal government to local governments.
