THE NIGHT OF THE JAGUAR: Proceeds from the seventh-annual Zoofari, an

Aug. 28 dinner/dance and auction chaired by Newport Beach residents

Debbie and Tom Newmeyer, will help pay for a new habitat for an

endangered species, the South American jaguar at the Santa Ana Zoo.

Actress and conservationist Tippi Hedren and past zoo president Howard

Hall will be honored at the event, which has the theme “The hottest spot

for the coolest cats!” Helping plan the event are Jay Kunkle, Friends of

the Santa Ana Zoo board president; Donel Wiles, Kathleen Edman, George

Hampton, Carol Carty and Carl Brown, all board members.

“Zoofari actually started off as just a fun idea for the zoo’s closest

supports--a safari/black-tie dinner under the stars” Debbie Newmeyer

said. “Now because of the uniqueness of the event and the growing loyalty

of its participants, Zoofari continues to exceed all expectations. Our

goal this year is to raise $75,000 for the jaguar habitat, but of course

the sky’s the limit.” Tickets at $125 a person can be obtained by calling

HE WILL BE MISSED: Newport Beach attorney and long-time Lion Club member

Wolf Stern died August 11th at the age of 76. Wolf was born in Germany,

immigrated to the U.S., joined the U.S. Army and returned to Germany

during WWII to fight in three major battles. After the war, Wolf

graduated from UCLA and the USC School of Law. Wolf’s law practice

focused on divorce law, and he was a dynamic competitor in the courtroom

for his clients. I have known a few men who, when they heard their

soon-to-be ex-wife’s retained Wolf as their divorce attorney, held up the

white flag rather than spend eight to 10 months in divorce court.

Wolf’s contribution to the community included just about every position

in the Lions world, most recently with the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor

Lions Club. He was known by thousands of Lions from California and around

the world as he served as Lions District Governor some years ago. Every

year you could find Wolf and his lovely wife of 17 years, Ann, working

the Costa Mesa Fish Fry. A couple of years ago, as Past District

Governor, Wolf presided over the charter night for the Newport Beach

Lions Club, which Ann was installed as President in July of this year.

Wolf was active in the Newport Beach Sister City Association, the Newport

Harbor Chamber of Commerce, the Bar Association and the Bahai’ Assembly

of Newport Beach.

Business and religious leaders, neighbors, friends and fellow Lions club

members from Costa Mesa and Newport Beach would be greeted by Wolf and

Ann at their annual July 4th Party, always held a few days before July

4th at Newport Dunes. It was a coveted invitation. Guests would enjoy the

hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, beverages and the music of Barry

Cole. But they really looked forward to sharing the red, white and blue

evening with Wolf and Ann. It was the sense of community at its best.

the Center Club. Newport Harbor Kiwanis Club meets at the University

Athletic Club. Noon: The Exchange Club of Orange Coast meets at the Bahia

Corinthian Yacht Club. 6:00 p.m.: The Newport Balboa Rotary meets at the

Bahia Corinthian Yacht for a program by Carl Schultheff, “El Toro: Both

sides have it wrong.”

THURSDAY -- 7:00 a.m.: The Costa Mesa Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club

meets for the monthly business meeting. Noon: Kiwanis Club of Newport

Beach-Corona del Mar meets at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht. The Costa Mesa

Kiwanis Club meets at the Holiday Inn for a program on the airport. The

Exchange Club of Newport Harbor meets at the Riverboat Restaurant for a

program by Rep. Chris Cox “The Airport and Chinagate.” The Newport-Irvine

Rotary Club meets at the Irvine Marriott for “The Anniversary Special.”
