Mollner in IPFL title game

AUSTIN, Texas -- Estancia High and Orange Coast College product

Mark Mollner, who completed his collegiate football career last fall at

the University of Hawaii, hasn’t given up on his gridiron dreams.

Mollner, now 6-foot-6, 260 pounds, is playing defensive end for the

Hawaii Hammerheads, who meet the Texas Terminators tonight in the Indoor

Professional Football League championship game at the Travis County

Exposition Center.

Mollner leads the Hammerheads’ “Shark Attack” defense with six

quarterback sacks in 15 games. His 53 tackles, including 12 for losses,

rank him fourth on the team.

Mollner, who has added more than 30 pounds from his playing weight with

the Rainbows, has helped the Hammerheads compile an 11-6 record.

Texas (12-4), which defeated Hawaii in two of their three regular-season

meetings, has averaged 43 points and 236 yards of total offense against

the Hammerheads, so Mollner and his defensive teammates should have their

hands full.

Hawaii did beat Texas, 55-44, in their most-recent meeting, July 3.

The Terminators are led by former University of Texas quarterback James

Brown, while former Los Alamitos High standout Tim Carey, who was a

college teammate of Mollner’s, quarterbacks the Hammerheads.

Hawaii defeated the Mississippi Fire Dogs, 36-16, to advance to the

second IPFL title game.

The league, which hopes to eventually merge with the Arena Football

League, has similar rules to the more-established indoor circuit, with

the notable exception of an end-zone net.

After tonight’s finale, Mollner is schedule to report to the Winnipeg

Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, in hopes ofcontinuing his

career.
