SHOWER SING

Golden West College is looking for singers who want to donate $20 to

sing in a shower with a disc jockey in front of a panel of judges

Saturday to help raise funds for the college’s Pacific Coast Civic Light

Opera.

Five hundred dollars worth of cash and prizes will be awarded.

“The Great American Charity Shower Sing,” sponsored by the Tile and

Plumbing Gallery in Huntington Beach, will take place at 1 p.m. at 19431

Beach Blvd.

Proceeds will be used to offset operating costs of running a

professional musical theater company.

Interested shower singers need to fill out an official entry form at

the Tile and Plumbing Gallery or call 536-8722 for more information.

SHORTER SEMESTER

Golden West College is offering 16-week class schedules this fall,

shortening the academic semester by two weeks, but offering the same

amount of instruction. Most classes will begin next week, with short-term

courses starting throughout the fall semester.

COOL SCHOOL

Jarrid Johnston, a sixth-grader at Grace Lutheran School in Huntington

Beach, received a $1,000 savings bond and $5,000 for his school in

recognition of his winning entry in the 1999 “Cool Schools” essay

contest.

The contest, sponsored locally by Johnson & Johnson and Ralphs, invited

students to write essays on how they would make their school better if

they had additional funding. Jarrid said he would buy an electronic

scoreboard for the school’s many sports teams.

OCEAN VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT DONATIONS

Circle View School received $50 from MacPherson Toyota and $6,160 from

the parent-teacher organization for field trips.

Hope View School received $20 from Deborah Shepley of Huntington Beach

for software.

Oak View School received $500 from Safeco Insurance Co. for the 100

volunteer hours that parent Robin Edwards worked and $45 from parents.

Marine View School received $328.50 from parents and $10,726 from the

parent-teacher-student association.

Mesa View School received $3,950 from parents for field trips.

Spring View School received $216 from parents for field trips.

Star View School received computer equipment from Michael Hutton of

Midway City, $50 from MacPherson Ford and $1,700 from the Rockwell

International Corp. Trust’s matching gift program.

Sun View School received $10 from Wells Fargo’s matching gift program

and $9 from parents.

CASH FOR CLASS

The following Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley schools received

donations from the Westminster Mall as part of Simon Property Group’s

Cash For Class program: Star View, St. Bonaventure, Grace Lutheran and

Harbour View elementary schools; Vista View, Mesa View, Dwyer, Fulton and

Masuda middle schools and Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Ocean View

and Marina high schools.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT DONATIONS

Tamura School received $144 from parent Tien Pham for school

materials.

Fulton Middle School received a $100 donation from the Los Angeles

Times, two lunch tables from the Fulton Student Council and $206 from the

PTA.

Moiola School received $6,633 worth of school supplies from the PTA

and an air-conditioning unit for the teachers’ lounge from Hopkins &

Associates of Fountain Valley.

SCHOOL AWARDS

The following Smith Elementary School volunteers and principal were

presented honorary service awards from the PTA for their dedication and

outstanding services to children.

Smith Principal Ann Sullivan was awarded the Golden Oak service award

for six years of outstanding service to the students, staff and PTA.

Harold Schmitz and his wife volunteer in first- and second-grade

classrooms.

Susie Templeton is a full-time volunteer in a second-grade classroom.

Kim Crooks works in the school district’s curriculum lab preparing

classroom educational materials and bulletin-board displays.

Deanne Keefer served as auditor and yearbook co-chair and was treasurer

for the previous two years.

Sharon Brigham was recognized for her many years of service to the

Smith PTA.

Isabelle Karsh volunteers in her daughter’s classroom and created a

parent directory.

Patty Copenhaver and Sheree Mountford were honored for their services

in several PTA committees.

PAPA’S HELP

Patricia Ledezma of Edison High School and Jesse Bucio of Ocean View

High School were among 10 students to receive $1,000 scholarships from

Papa John’s pizza restaurants.

The selection committee evaluates students on criteria including

community involvement, creative ability, academic achievement, obstacles

overcome and character.
